"Boyhood" Tops 2014 Indiana Film Journalists Association Awards

The Indiana Film Journalists Association, an organization of writers dedicated to promoting quality film criticism in the Hoosier State, is proud to announce its annual film awards for 2014.

"Boyhood" won top honors, taking the prize for Best Film and earning a total of three awards. Richard Linklater won in the Best Director category, and the film also took the Original Vision award, which recognizes a film that is especially innovative or groundbreaking.

"Whiplash," which was the runner-up for Best Film, won two awards: Damien Chazelle's script in the Best Adapted Screenplay race, and J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor.

"The Grand Budapest Hotel" also won two awards: Ralph Fiennes was named Best Actor, and Wes Andersonearned the Best Original Screenplay prize.

Besides the winner and runner-up for Best Film, eight other movies were named Finalists in that category, cumulatively representing Indiana film critics' picks for the 10 best movies of 2014. (See full list below.)

Reese Witherspoon took Best Actress honors for "Wild," while Jessica Chastain took Best Supporting Actress for "A Most Violent Year."

In the inaugural vote for the newest category, Best Vocal/Motion Capture Performance, Andy Serkis won for his work on "The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes." The IFJA is the only critics group in the U.S. to give out an award for nonrepresentational acting.

"The LEGO Movie" won Best Animated Feature, "Two Days, One Night" took the prize for Best Foreign Language Film and "Life Itself" took Best Documentary.

The Hoosier Award, which recognizes a significant cinematic contribution by a person or persons with roots in Indiana, or a film that depicts Hoosier State locales and stories, went to film historian and preservationist Eric Grayson.

IFJA members issued this statement with regard to the Hoosier Award: "For more than a decade, Grayson has worked tirelessly to collect, restore and exhibit movies on celluloid film, often for little to no pay or recognition. We commend his efforts to preserve movies in their original state and show them to people who share his passion for cinema. Countless films would have been lost to the ages were it not for his efforts."

Indiana Film Journalists Association announces 2012 Awards

This is obviously not a new review, but the critics' group I belong to has released their 2012 awards.  I did take part in the voting and even a few of my selections won.  The main story from our group is the fact that Safety Not Guaranteed won Best Film.  This is definitely an original selection and I for one think it's pretty cool to be part of a group willing to go in that direction.  That said, I did not vote for that film.  Sorry, I am one of those lame, predictable critics who loves Lincoln and The Master.  I can't help it.  Anyway, I don't have my end of the year stuff ready yet, so you'll have to wait and see if I'm completely boring and predictable in my personal picks for the year.  Until then, check out the awards and try to check out Safety Not Guaranteed, if you haven't already.  I may not have voted for it, but I still really enjoyed it.

In the Best Actor category, Bradley Cooper in "Silver Linings Playbook" and Daniel Day-Lewis in "Lincoln" tied for winner. In a few short years, Vickers has established IU Cinema as a major hub for serious consideration of film as an art form, scheduling an ambitious program of film screenings, retrospectives, festivals, traveling exhibits and topical programs. He has also attracted prominent guest lecturers, including Werner Herzog during the past year. Previously, Vickers served as managing director of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame.

2010 Indiana Film Journalists Association Awards

This marks my first awards season as a member of the Indiana Film Journalists Association (IFJA) and I am very proud to present our awards for 2010. A little commentary on the awards first, though. I want to point out that this is not my personal list or anything (I'll be posting a Top Ten list later on this year), but I feel this is a very strong list and I can't really disagree with how the voting came out. A few points that would have come out differently if I had my druthers, though: Black Swan would be the best film of the year with Aronofsky taking directing honors as well (though I am very happy to see Nolan's name there). I loved James Franco in 127 Hours, but in the end I felt Jesse Eisenberg gave the best performance of the year.

More importantly, I emphatically support our selection of Hailee Steinfeld for Best Supporting Actress (True Grit) and Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor (The Fighter). And, as you probably know if you read my Black Swan review, I am in complete support of Natalie Portman winning Best Actress.

Enough of my rambling, though; here are the IFJA's 2010 Awards, enjoy!
